Thank You Andrew for the inspiration to create this hike!

Last fall, a mid 20’s, US Navy, Farsi translator veteran, touring Europe on his own before going back to the USA on a military scholarship wanted to get a “good hike workout”, said he had a limited budget, so ECHO Trails worked out a doable rate for him. On that hike the “Backpackers Rigi Hike” was conceived.

The Backpackers Rigi Hike is for those of you who want “a more challenging hike” at “a more affordable” rate. ECHO Trails, owner, René, scouted and hiked this with his 28 year old son. The 5 ½ to 6 hour, 1200m/ 3600 ft total altitude gain provided the “good workout” and the son gives the hike a thumbs up! This “T2” degree of difficulty hike is very doable, suggest you wear ankle high hiking shoes and to protect the affordable rate, just need a minimum of two people to sign up to do the guided hike.

  • You experience a 5 ½ to 6 hour scenic hike along sign-posted trails through orchards, green pastures, forests, summits, with a total altitude gain of 1200m/3600 ft.
  • You see the wonderful Alps and Lake Lucerne vistas throughout the hike.
  • You meet Swiss locals on the trail and engage in things of mutual interest.
  • You enjoy the taste of local Swiss sausages “slow food” in one of the scenic public grilling sites. (Let us know if you are vegetarian and we will grill tofu shish kebabs)
  • You hear “Switzerland 101” in just one day and gain an insight into the people and place as your guide explains the ecology, history and culture of the Mt. Rigi area where people from all over the continent have been coming for over 500 years.
  • Your knowledge of Switzerland enhanced as you return to Lucerne with a sense of how Switzerland was formed, founded and functions today.
  • At night you reward yourself with the self-satisfaction you know you have earned your drinks!

Hike Description

You depart the Lucerne train station for a 20 minute ride to a nearby town and then transfer on a public bus which takes you to the beginning point of the hike. You start by walking through cherry orchards and pastures before progressing up the mountain. This area was once covered by a huge glacier and you will find out more about the ecology along the way. As you hike up you have the 2200m/7200 ft Mt. Pilatus in your sight most of the time.

Once your reach the top of the mountain you walk on to a public grilling spot at one of the highest points on Mt. Rigi with the entire Central Alp Mountain range in front of you. Lunch at the outdoor grilling spot provides you free time to check out the surroundings and enjoy the awesome view.

Afterwards you continue along the signposted path that Mark Twain hiked along during his 1897 visit to Mt Rigi. This path is also the old railway line that connected 2 small hamlets the pre-World War l period from 1874 to 1914. You have awesome vistas over Lake Lucerne as you gently ascend to a summit platform with a stunning 360 degree view of the surrounding Alps.

In the late afternoon you take the cable car back down to the other side of the mountain and after a short walk arrive at the train station for your 25 minute return ride back to Lucerne
