Backpacker’s Mt Rigi Day Trip – Details
We depart the Lucerne train station for a 20 minute ride to a nearby town and then transfer on a public bus which takes us to the beginning point of the hike.
We start by walking through cherry orchards and pastures before progressing up the mountain. This area was once covered by a huge glacier. You will find out more about the ecology along the way.
As we hike up the 2200 m/7200 ft, Mt. Pilatus will be in our sight most of the time.
Once we’re at the top of the mountain, we walk on to a public grilling spot at one of the highest points on Mt. Rigi. The entire Central Alp Mountain range will be in front.
Break for Lunch
Lunch at the outdoor grilling spot provides free time to check out the surroundings, relaxation, and enjoyment of the awesome views.
Continuing the Hike
Afterwards we continue along the signposted path that Mark Twain hiked along during his 1897 visit to Mt Rigi. This path is also the old railway line that connected 2 small hamlets the pre-World War l period from 1874 to 1914.
There are awesome vistas over Lake Lucerne as we gently ascend to a summit platform with a stunning 360 degree view of the surrounding Alps.
In the late afternoon we take the cable car back down to the other side of the mountain and after a short walk arrive at the train station for a 25 minute return ride back to Lucerne.
