The Journey Begins

Your day of exploration starts with a scenic journey to the base of Pilatus. Whether you’re traveling by train, boat, or a combination of both, the journey itself becomes an integral part of the Pilatus experience.

Our recommendation

Going via Kriens you will find less people, especially if you arrive before 10 am.

If you decide to go via Alpnachstadt instead, we also recommend to take the train and arrive early, at least before the boat from Lucene arrives. You will be ahead of the crowd.

Ascend to the Summit for Panoramic Views

Upon reaching the base, you’ll find a variety of options to ascend the mountain. The Pilatus Railway, the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, offers a thrilling ride, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Alternatively, the cable car and gondola options provide a different perspective, allowing you to soak in the beauty from varying altitudes.

Arriving at the summit, prepare to be mesmerized by the panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see. The Swiss Alps unfold in all their glory, showcasing a tapestry of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and pristine lakes. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these breathtaking moments of nature’s majesty.

Our tips

On the top, a must see is the Esel summit with wonderful 360-degree view over the Alps and the surrounding lakes.

For the small ones, inside the arrival station there is a nice entertainment area where you can fly a dragon and watch a short movie about the history of Pilatus.

Another must is the hike inside the dragon cave. Very suggestive but watch your head!

Outdoor Activities and Adventure

For the adventure seekers, Pilatus offers a range of outdoor activities. Hiking trails beckon, leading you through alpine meadows and enchanting forests. The Dragon’s Path and the Pilatus-Kulm Historical Trail provide an opportunity to explore the rich cultural history of the region.

Our tips

If you fancy some adrenaline fun, at the middle station at Fräkmütteg there is a lovely “rodelban” (toboggan). Open only in summer offers a wonderful adrenaline rush for kids and adults.

If you like hiking, you have plenty of options depending on your fitness level. If you are quite fit we highly recommend to start your hike in Fräkmütteg and hike to the top. It takes about 2 to 3 hours and it is quite challenging and steep, however you will be rewarded with fantastic views.
